Africa Pro Bono Work

Our pro bono practice draws on the experience of our professionals worldwide to improve the lives of those most in need and least able to pay.  Whether by acting on behalf of individual clients, meeting the legal needs of charities and social enterprises, or through policy advocacy, our goal is to tackle injustice on a global scale.

Our clients

FARM Africa has set up a veterinary franchise in Kenya called Sidai.   Sidai aims to revolutionise the way that livestock and veterinary services are offered to pastoralists and farmers in Kenya creating a more sustainable model of livestock service delivery.  Sidai is a social enterprise that charges farmers a fair price for all its products and services thereby generating revenues to support its delivery of services to underserved communities in more challenging locations in the long term.  We assisted FARM Africa with the structuring of the social enterprise through corporate, intellectual property and tax advice.

Water and Sanitation for the Urban Poor (WSUP) aims to address the fact that 2.4 million people worldwide do not have access to adequate sanitation.  They have developed and produced an affordable and sustainable 'in-home sanitation solution' that they install and maintain; creating jobs through their franchise model and a more hygienic and safer environment for the communities they work in.  This project is called Clean Team and is based in Ghana.  Hogan Lovells lawyers have advised on partnership agreements, intellectual property and tax in relation to the project.

Hogan Lovells has recently advised PEAS (Promoting Education in African Schools) , a charity and social enterprise hybrid, on a public private partnership with the Ugandan government to increase access to secondary education. PEAS offers an innovative solution to the shortage of quality, affordable secondary school places in Sub-Saharan Africa and Hogan Lovells is providing them with on-going legal and financial support.

In recent years, the firm has teamed with the International Senior Lawyers Project (ISLP) to assist the Government of Liberia in the negotiation and renegotiation of natural resource concession agreements, mineral development agreements, and investment contracts; development of a Model Mineral Development agreement; and review and revision of Liberian procurement laws. Hogan Lovells also has worked with ISLP and the Liberian Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in developing a legal framework for the delivery of health services, including recommendations on the Public Health Law.  The Hogan Lovells-ISLP team has advised on the development of the law that created the Liberian Medicines and Health Products Regulatory Agency and on provisions addressing mental health, reproductive health, communicable diseases and other issues.  Current projects also include work on development of special economic zone law, tax policy issues, and concession agreement enforcement.

Numerous Hogan Lovells partners have supported these projects with on-site work in Liberia.  The work has been recognized by awards for Hogan Lovells team members from the Volunteers for Economic Growth Alliance (VEGA), the American Lawyer, the American Health Lawyers Association, and ISLP itself.

The American Lawyer honored us with its Lifetime Achievement Award  for Citizenship for our work in Liberia at its Global Legal Awards dinner in September. To help address the major challenges facing Liberia's fledgling democracy, our lawyers, together with the International Senior Lawyers Project (ISLP), have been providing extensive pro bono assistance to Liberia's Ministries of Justice, Finance, and Health and Social Welfare since 2007.
